Fresh 48 vs. Newborn Photography: What’s the Difference?
If you’re expecting a baby, you’ve probably heard the terms newborn session and Fresh 48. So what’s the difference?
Both document the beginning of your baby’s life, but they capture two very different moments.
As a Sacramento newborn photographer—and a mom of three—I know how quickly those first days pass. You’re tired, you’re learning each other, and somehow your tiny baby already seems different every time you look at them.

A Fresh 48 session takes place within your baby’s first 48 hours, either at home, in a birth center, or in the hospital.
These sessions are mostly documentary. There is very little posing.
I photograph what is actually happening:
Fresh 48 is about the very beginning. It captures your baby while everything is still brand new—the tiny details, the exhaustion, the emotion, and the strange, beautiful feeling of realizing that the person you’ve been waiting for is finally here.
You don’t need to get dressed up or know what to do in front of the camera.
You’ve just had a baby.
I’ll meet you right there.

A newborn session takes place during your baby’s first month, usually once you’ve had a little time to settle in at home.
My Sacramento newborn sessions are relaxed, simple, and baby-led. No props or elaborate setups.
I photograph the way your baby naturally fits into your life.
There is no need for your home or your family to look “perfect.”
I will gently guide you when needed, but I want your photographs to feel like your family—not like you’re trying to recreate someone else’s idea of what newborn life should look like.

Fresh 48 captures the very beginning.
A Newborn session captures those first days at home.
Can’t Decide? You don’t have to!
I love when families choose both because they preserve two completely different pieces of the same story.
Neither is better.
They’re simply different.

I photograph newborns and Fresh 48 sessions for families in Sacramento, CA and surrounding communities.
Whether I meet you during those first 48 hours or come to your home a little later, my goal is the same: to document this beginning honestly, simply, and beautifully.
Because these days don’t last very long.
But the photographs can.
